Re (Opening) – Safely

It took just a virus to make the world come to a standstill. Majority of the world is in some form of lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic. As India readies itself to open the lockdown in a phased manner, and people are looking forward to join their offices, we need to be cautious. Everything is going to change, given the nature of the pandemic. The biggest challenge businesses will face is restarting their operations. But even before that, there’s a whole lot of new measures that businesses must take to ensure smooth functioning. Reopening India requires all of us to move forward together by following social distancing and proper disinfection of public spaces. Cleaning and disinfecting public spaces including your offices, industries, schools, colleges and restaurants will require you to:

  1. Strategically develop a plan
  2. Implement the plan
  3. Maintain and revise the plan

To devise a reopening plan you’ll need to set a checklist of tasks before opening the business for public. So here you go:

  1. Go through your state/central government policies, see if the government has given any specific guidelines to follow.
  2. Review the products you’ll require: You’ll need to stockpile large quantities of products you’ve never stockpiled before; ranging from disinfectants, sanitizers, sanitizer bottles, PPE kits if required, temperature sensors. You’ll need to tie-up with a trust-worthy distributor, check the quality of products and purchase the stock in bulk. You’ll need to demark a storage space for these products. You need to understand which products to buy, how to use them and train your staff accordingly.
  3. Employee Training: Gone are the days of customary handshakes before and after meetings, employees need to be trained to maintain social distancing. You need to review employee working policies and implement different shifts for employees. You’ll also need a dedicated house cleaning staff in your premises to disinfect at least twice a day. With this, even your employees need to be trained to disinfect and sanitize their tables and personal belongings.
  4. Revise your employee policies: You’ll need to revise your leave policies. You don’t want an employee coming in sick, so make space for paid sick leaves and encourage employees to work remotely from home. You need to implement new hygiene policies, ask employees to sanitize their hands every 45-60 mins, make space for larger capacity cafeterias to avoid overcrowding, and ensuring every employee wears a face mask.
